HIGH The loving detail bestowed on the environment.
LOW ‘Detective vision’ is a staple.
WTF Could this be the soothing balm for 2020?
HIGH I’m a freakin’ shark!
LOW That framerate.
WTF The story was… deeper… than expected
HIGH Filling a taxonomy entry and finally getting an illustration.
LOW Occasionally rushing while power and oxygen meters dwindle.
WTF The amusingly rudimentary names Dr. Vas comes up with.
HIGH Watching an enormous shark slowly drift by in front of me.
LOW The entire inventory system.
WTF Are these sharks drunk? They keep crashing into things.
HIGH A nice environmentalist undertone.
LOW Constantly slamming on the X button to make the levels navigable.
WTF Awkward, uncomfortable PSVR implementation.
As someone who spends a lot of time reviewing games, reading about games, talking about games, and keeping up with game news, it was more than a little surprising to me to get a hot tip from… my eight-year-old. I’m not exactly sure how the pre-teen grapevine works, but apparently someone watched some YouTube somewhere, and that led to telling someone else about an early access game, and then that person told friend A, who told friend B, who told friend C, which eventually culminated in me hearing about Subnautica. It’s not my normal method of getting the scoop on something to watch for, but hey, I’ll take it.
