Anyway, 2013 is a strange year. It's now October, and ordinarily I'd be up to my neck in review games at this time, but I'm actually drifting between assignments with nothing really due… I'm never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, though, so I decided to jump into a few things that have been lingering on the backlog.

I'm not much into the college marching bands, I don't watch college football and no matter how amazing some say Drumline was, it has never occurred to me that I need to watch a marching band actually do anything.
This is a different matter entirely.
The Ohio State University pays tribute to beloved classic video games (and Halo) during the half-time show at the Ohio State University vs Nebraska game. Games honored at the show were Tetris, Pokémon, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Halo, The Legend of Zelda and Pac-Man. Try not to jump out of your seat and cheer when Epona makes an appearance.

Mario and Luigi have been busy the last couple of years. The 3DS has been crammed with all sorts of Mario-themed adventures from Mario Kart 7 to Super Mario 3D Land to Mario Tennis: Open—Luigi has even gotten his own sequel this year. Needless to say, the Mario Brothers are busy. But even so, does that make it okay to leave their other less-talented brother behind to man the shop. Doesn't he deserve some of the glory?

PETA targets Mario and Tanooki suit
For those who don't know, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has taken on Nintendo and Super Mario because Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS features a Tanooki suit. According to PETA, this as good a time as any to call attention to the plight of the adorable tanuki.

Artist Andreas Heikaus created this video as part of his Bachelor thesis at University. Combining CG with live-action footage, Heikaus takes the world of Super Mario Bros. and throws it onto the sidewalks of (presumably) Hannover, Germany. You don't have to look very long to see it how clever it is.

Obviously, Mario was destined for bigger things. That meant a more desirable damsel in distress—why did Donkey Kong want Pauline anyway? But who knew their break-up was so bitter.
Mario propaganda posters
These have been called Super Mario propaganda posters, but clearly these are Bowser propaganda posters. These are what we picture at the Bowser headquarters, in the Koopa and Goomba barracks and on the walls of their nurseries at home. It would only be through omnipresent propaganda that Bowser could command his followers on so many failed attempts to take over the Mushroom Kingdom.
