Warhammer 40K: Dawn Of War III Preview

I had a chance to get a hold of Relic’s upcoming Dawn of War III during their recent closed multiplayer-only beta, and I found myself torn. While there were changes and improvements I enjoyed, there were also some design decisions I found extremely questionable. HIGH Combining the jetpack and war hammer for devastating results.

LOW The overwhelming sense of boredom that came over me when there was still six hours of game left.

WTF Does anyone honestly think that that giant armor looks cool?

Crates for the Crate Throne!

HIGH Charging across a bridge to take on the forces of Chaos with a squad of marines at my back.

LOW The disappointing final boss is a wave fight in a boring arena followed by a quick-time event.

WTF All these slow-moving platform elevators and no ambushes on them?

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Review

I suspect that there is no genre more rigidly formulaic than Real Time Strategy (RTS) games. Now, this can be said of almost any genre, but the interesting thing about RTS games is how similar the specific actions that the game is made up of are. Start a level with no troops. Build a base. Gather resources. Build a bigger base. Build an army. Crush your enemy with an overwhelming attack. Repeat for the next fifteen years.
