This Is Not A Review: Underworld Ascendant

Welcome to This Is Not A Review. In these articles we discuss general impressions, ideas and thoughts on any given game, but as the title implies, it’s not a review. Instead, it’s an exercise in offering a quick recommendation (or dismissal) after spending enough time to grasp the ideas and gameplay of a thing without necessarily playing it from A to Z.

The subject of this installment: Underworld Ascendant, developed by Otherside Entertainment and published by 505 Games.

Fallout 76 Review

 Almost Hell, West Virginia

HIGH Solid variety in the environments.

LOW Combat in the Creation Engine, without V.A.T.S., and with constant stuttering and lag.

WTF Charging $60 for what feels like alpha access.

Rise & Shine Review

It Does Neither

HIGH Some lovely animation and music.

LOW An awkward tone and a terrible sense of humor.

WTF The idea of clearing the final level on Switch without the Pro Controller.

The Light Keeps Us Safe Preview

There’s very little dialogue in The Light Keeps Us Safe. At the start of the game, the only speaking role is a woman whispering into the player’s communications device, and she’s only around for a few minutes before she leaves. However, she utters one of the most evocative opening lines I’ve heard recently.

“You are lucky, in a way. You got to hide down there for so long. But now you have to deal with it all alone.”

Shenmue I & II Review

I See

HIGH Offered an unprecedented level of detail for its time.

LOW The ludicrous maze-like layout of the Yellow Head Building.

WTF The absolutely bonkers left turn Shenmue II takes in its final moments.

Immortal: Unchained Review

 Nothing But Bits

HIGH Some strong visual design… in spots.

LOW Too many to count, but those damn teleporting enemies rank high.

WTF Arlen is one of the messiest boss battles I’ve ever seen.
