Last November, my son and I attended a pinball convention. I’ve been hooked ever since, so was extremely happy to get to the opportunity to look at the retro-inspired pinball game Demon’s Tilt.

Elderborn Preview
First-person games these days seem to have one of two presentations — they either feature a gun and gallons of blood, or a person walking peacefully though scenes while picking up objects. It’s easy to see that Elderborn gets its inspiration from the former, but in a twist, it takes the gun out of the equation. Instead, players will pick up a series of melee weapons to fight evil, striking, parrying, and kicking their way through an ancient Egyptian-inspired dungeon while searching for gold along the way.
Elo Hell Preview
The title of this game, Elo Hell (google it) describes its current Early Access state accurately, and I’m not sure that there’s any indication pointing towards future progress. It’s both a new MOBA called Echo Star and a story-driven adventure about the rise of Echo Star and its professional players. There’s not much more to it in this early build, and with so little working content, Elo Hell can barely be called a game at this point.
PixARK Preview
PixARK makes a strong case that developers should start with a tutorial. It doesn’t have to be comprehensive – games can have layered systems, and it’s fine for players to be learning new things right up until the credits roll. However, if they can’t explain how to get through the first couple of hours of their game, it might be time to go back to the drawing board.
This Is Not A Review: Solace Crafting
Welcome to This Is Not A Review. In these articles we discuss general impressions, ideas and thoughts on any given game, but as the title implies, it’s not a review. Instead, it’s an exercise in offering a quick recommendation (or dismissal) after spending enough time to grasp the ideas and gameplay of a thing without necessarily playing it from A to Z.
The subject of this installment: Solace Crafting, developed and published by Big Kitty Games.
Subnautica Preview
As someone who spends a lot of time reviewing games, reading about games, talking about games, and keeping up with game news, it was more than a little surprising to me to get a hot tip from… my eight-year-old. I’m not exactly sure how the pre-teen grapevine works, but apparently someone watched some YouTube somewhere, and that led to telling someone else about an early access game, and then that person told friend A, who told friend B, who told friend C, which eventually culminated in me hearing about Subnautica. It’s not my normal method of getting the scoop on something to watch for, but hey, I’ll take it.
Coffence Preview
For some adults, coffee is the lifeblood elixir that gets them through the day. In Coffence from Sweet Bandit Studios, this couldn’t be more true as coffee is the life — literally — of each character. This is a fighting game where players attempt to hit the other’s coffee cup until it’s emptied. It can be played as a duel between two players, or up to a four-player free-for-all.
All Walls Must Fall Preview
In All Walls Must Fall, the new timebending turn-based strategy/dating sim from inbetween games, time is the only currency that matters. Set in a version of 2089 where the Berlin Wall never fell and Cold War tensions remain high, All Walls puts players in the role of an East German secret policeman on a quest to stop a catastrophic explosion that’s going to level the city in three hours. Or perhaps cause it.

Dead Cells Preview
Stop me if you’ve heard this before — a 2D platformer borrowing from Metroid and Castlevania which also has roguelike elements just hit Steam Early Access. This time, though, the game already feels finished, and has been nearly impossible to put down for the past week. Dead Cells manages to go beyond genre pastiche and freshens up one of the most crowded spaces in gaming. It’s well worth checking out even in its “unfinished” state.
