Nioh Review

Not Just Shogun Souls

HIGH The feeling of one-shotting a boss.

LOW Lots of re-used environmental assets.

WTF How does something that small have a tongue that huge?

The Dark Souls Letters Part 4: Dragons and Death

The original Dark Souls was my least favorite game in the venerable Souls series by a pretty wide margin. The reasons are numerous, but in a nutshell I just wanted to be done with it by the time I got to Gwyn. I was so aggravated that I skipped the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, which is regarded by many as the high point of the entire series. Being as obsessively completionist as I am about these games, I have to go back and take care of it before Dark Souls 3’s final expansion is released. I turned to GameCritics’ resident Dark Souls apologist Mike Suskie for guidance and counsel. The latest portion of our correspondence is below, with more updates to come as I progress through the game. Enjoy!

Let it Die Review

Let it Thrive

HIGH Evolving from a ridiculously weak fighter into a nightmarish harbinger of death.

LOW Grinding for drops to improve equipment can be pretty nasty at times.

WTF Let it Die — a free-to-play title — launched without monetization.

Let It Die Preview

In 2026, a massive cataclysm will rock the world. Earthquakes will ruin nations, chunks of Japan will fall into the ocean, and a massive city-spire known as the Tower of Barbs will rise from the sea and beckon adventurers to explore its heights.  Oh, and a skateboarding grim reaper wearing 3D glasses will also be there to dole out advice to those who dare the climb.

Let It Die, Dev Diary #1

Let-It-Die-1

Let It Die, the new roguelike hack-and-slash third-person PVP free-to-play title coming from Grasshopper Manufacture (can we squeeze one more descriptor in there?!?) was one of my favorite titles from this year’s PAX West, and it’s coming exclusively to PS4 this year.

Necropolis Review

Dead on arrival

HIGH The art style.

LOW Said art style losing its edge over hours of repeated levels.

WTF The choice to provide “humorous” item descriptions over helpful ones.
