Subtitles Matter: Talking With Deaf Gamers TV

Here at Gamecritics, we’ve been adding information on accessibility to our reviews for over a decade. It’s an issue that’s important to us, and we want others to see its value – after all, we love games, and we want as many people as possible to love them too! However, it’s really hard to love something that’s not willing to let you in, such as games that lack subtitles or visual cues, for example.

In order to get some perspective on the issue form people who are directly impacted, I had a quick chat with the guys from Deaf Gamer TV, a group who do Twitch and YouTube videos in American Sign Language.

Blizzard has made another round of changes to their smash team-based shooter Overwatch as of July 22nd. Originally I had written parts of this article for my Overwatch review, but I couldn’t justify another 700 words of straight Team Fortress 2 comparison. Those words now go here, since I wanted to go into more detail about just how much Overwatch is a spiritual child of Team Fortress 2. The TF2 heritage goes beyond aesthetic qualities and deep into the mechanics of its characters. Thus, seasoned TF2 veterans will recognize these similarities very quickly.
