2019 has certainly been a year, and while it’s had its ups and downs, I’d like to think it’s been a pretty strong one for games — in part because the expected crop of sequels, franchise entries, and long-anticipated debuts fell surprisingly flat, clearing the field for new and unusual titles to have time in the spotlight.

Another year, another top 10.
Hey! I don’t have much to say. It was an okay year.
There are a lot of games I didn’t manage to get to that are still on my “to play” list — frankly, there’s never enough time to get to them all. For every ‘big’ one I still want to get to, there’s an indie or two that are just as interesting and that same diversity of interest is reflected in the games I did pick for my 2019 list.
I’ve been trying to assess how to actually gauge how ‘great’ a year is for videogaming considering that videogames are cool and every year there’s way too many great games to play, and I think I’ve come up with a pretty good barometer.
According to my steam account, over the past year I’ve played 720 different games. In lieu of a traditional top 10, I’ve decided to pick one game from each month in 2019 that you owe it to yourself to spend some time with.
