According to ESRB, this game contains: Violence

Parents should have no problem with Freelancer. It contains some mild violence, but nothing of the sort that isn't shown on television sci-fi shows such as Star Trek or Babylon 5.

Fans of space-flight sims might or might not like Freelancer. Its control scheme is a clear departure for the genre, but others may find it to work quite well.

Fans of open-ended games such as Privateer, Frontier: Elite 2, or even The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind may enjoy Freelancer quite a bit as if offers a huge world to explore, but those who are turned off by randomly generated content may want to take a pass.

Fans of 3D space shooters such as Star Fox might actually like Freelancer, since its control scheme is simplified to the point that reaches a balance between arcade-style action and tactical simulation although hard core fans of either may want to stay away.

Finally, fans of science fiction may enjoy Freelancer's interesting premise and marginally entertaining (if a bit ham-fisted) plot, but those looking for truly groundbreaking or thought-provoking sci-fi probably won't find it here.

There is also a multiplayer mode which some people may find interesting, but I didn't. I confess to not being a big fan of online multiplayer, but I can get into it on occasion. Freelancer, though, didn't seem to offer much in multiplayer other than the opportunity to share its boring randomness with other people. The multiplayer mode is essentially the same as single-player, only minus the plot. Each player is given a ship and money like in the normal mode, but with nothing to do now except take jobs, upgrade their ship, and team up with or go against other players who are also doing the same. Although I suppose some people might find this diverting, I just didn't see the point since I don't find anything interesting about doing the randomly generated missions whatsoever. The presence of other players gives it a boost, but not enough I felt to really make it worth my time.
