Big changes are coming to Gamecritics.com!

It’s been in the works for a long time but we’ve been preparing for a revamp of our site, and it’s nearly ready to launch. The upcoming top-to-bottom redesign will introduce a host of improvements — some immediately noticeable and some not so much.

Many upgrades will happen behind the scenes, like a smoother editing process and quicker turnaround times between when a review is written and when readers see it published.

More obvious changes include going 100% ad-free, becoming truly mobile-friendly, offering a main page that’s more streamlined, more elegant layouts for our reviews, and although comments will still be enabled, we will be closing the doors and turning off the lights on the forums in an effort to be leaner and more efficient.

Before the forums go away, we want to thank all of our long-time and regular readers and commenters who’ve made them a great place to talk about games over the years. We’ve always appreciated your participation in the site, and it’s been wonderful to see such a dedicated core of people posting. If you’re one of the forum users, please archive any valuable threads and make arrangements to connect with people outside of the message boards since that information will not be archived or retrievable once the change happens.

Thank you all for being a part of the Gamecritics community for the last sixteen years, and we look forward to building on that relationship for another sixteen, and beyond. And, as always, we welcome your comments and feedback on what we do. Once the new site goes live, we’d love to hear what you think. Please drop us a line and let us know!

 Thanks for your support!

Looking forward to exploring the new GameCritics.com.

I’m sad to see the forums go away too. I know they had not seen as much activity in recent years, but I first discovered Gamecritics in college when the forums were still on the gamers.com boards and I spent hours reading through threads, discovering new games, and generally getting to know everyone. It seems like the forums got a little too granular a few years back and there were too many options to post threads in, so I just never did. I do really like the new look of things. Would there be a a way to make it… Read more »

Looks good but… sad to see the forums go away 🙁

They might not have been extremely active, but it was always a good place for discussing games.

@other former forum inhabitants: any idea for a new meeting place?

I could make old forum regulars into admins for the GameCritics.com Facebook page. What do you think?

I am not on Facebook… 🙁

While I think that with a well working comment section (where you can actually reply to a posting directly) some of the discussion could come here, it’s still not as good as a forum to discuss things in detail. Or discuss things that don’t necessarily relate to current events. Where will I be able to write lengthy postings about my Metal Gear-marathon in future? Or report how I fail horribly at some complex strategy game I’m trying out? Or how my Dark Souls 3 Soul Level 1 run is going? 😉

What if we created a once-a-month post exclusively for comments discussion similar to Gamers with Jobs? I don’t know if we can turn off moderation per post, but its something we can look into.

Aye, a monthly post or perhaps once a fortnight along the lines of “what have you been playing?” might be an idea. Still, leaves a gap in community interaction I guess, but we can see how it goes.

One thing I want to point out re: the forums is that they were an entirely different system than the website that was just dressed up to look the same. Therefore it required its own maintenance, upkeep, and moderation, and we barely have enough people to keep up with the website as it is.

A community discussion post is a good idea though.

btw. is there a way to create an account of some sort or do I have to prove every time I want to write a comment that I’m human? (captcha)

No, we can’t allow non-members to have accounts. You’ll have to keep proving you’re a human 🙂

Does this also mean anyone could pose as another member? I don’t see anything stopping me from pretending to be Li-Ion, for example.

These icons don’t seem to be based on usernames. This is a test to see if they’re based on email.

The only other forum I was ever a regular at has dried up and all but died. Some comment was made, angered a monitor, who locked the whole forum to all new members, and kind of disappeared from the site. Not sure the whole story (or the whole truth) but just checked and it has some tumbleweeds, but not much else. Li-Ion, if you do find a good forum, somehow spread the word and let us know. My biggest issue with most active gaming forums is that they are like discussions in a middle school cafeteria. Sure, there’s people talking,… Read more »

Why is there a “Consumer Guide to Ratings” in the About section when you don’t have numerical ratings?

Warwick, highlight the end of the review to see the rating. We’ve always hidden them in order to de-emphasize the scores, but they are there.

Keep this on the down low… highlight the end of the review. At GameCritics we do not talk about the ratings.

Sooo when are the forums coming back? Since GP died I need a need place to hang out and random tower is a bit boring.

The ‘m’ from com is missing on (my) mobile front page. The drop down menu is what is covering it.

The site looks great though!

Yeah, I knew about that one. That’s part of the theme we’re using. It’ll be fixed later on.

Cool! The grey background is a bit boring in my opinion, The original orange I quite like. Anyone else have thoughts about this?

Yep, can see them all now!

Have checked the new site on both my phone and iPad. Both look great, but it really stands out on a tablet. Great job Richard!

I have noticed two small format/layout issues. Would you like us to post these in the comments or send a message directly?

Looks pretty swish on mobile, nice job folks. Congrats on the ad-free relaunch!

One thing – although it says there are 15 comments on this post, I can only see Tom’s two most recent and Brad’s reply to one of them, for a total of 3.

I can see other comment links – Dan, game vet etc, but the links don’t work. Probably something to do with me, I’m using an iPhone if that helps.

Horizontally scrolling recent content at the top – check. Nice divisions between sections of content and a lot of space for easy reading – check. No commercials to clutter the content – check. Twitter scrolls easily on my iPad pro – check. And a really smooth launch for me on my iPad pro. Did I mention I have the iPad Pro ? Great work all those who set up new revised site. A Smooth launch is just so rare. At least for me it’s smooth so I’m thankful and impressed. Was the new site done in house by GC volenteers… Read more »

Tom, after the new site launches we’re definitely going to be looking at a few more features to be putting out. This will be opening a lot of doors for us.

Aw, thanks so much for your praise, Tom, but GC is really a team effort for sure… There just wouldn’t be a site if everyone on the team didn’t come together to make it happen. I’m fortunate to have fallen in with a good group of folks for so many years!

Wow, that’s the quick response I was asking for….very nice.

And thanks for all your hard work Brad that you put into GC. You and I know that you’re the heart and soul of GC, so let’s just just keep it between ourselves…

A volunteer site with NO ads !? I’m impressed GC. I Think reviews and the podcasts are the strengths of gamecritics, and whatever assists in the sustaining and developing those aspects should be the main focus, like you guys seem to be doing. With the understanding that this is a completely voluntary site, and with the removal of forums, ( which I never really contributed to ) a quicker publishing to the site of comments would be more important and appreciated. It Would keep the potential conversation flowing better. Again, I know it’s hard updating the podcasts and editing it,… Read more »

Bracken solocast — I can’t even manage to keep up with the group ones.

There’s nothing wrong with having a man crush on me, though — I’m sort of dreamy. :p

No worries, the content of the site won’t change, we’ll just get rid of the ads… You can expect the same reviews and blog posts that we’ve had all along. Promise! = )

Please don’t turn into other games sites that have constant non-games stuff filling up the main page. Game of Thrones this, Marvel that etc. Top 7 people in Alice that look like trees. You know, all that click-bait crap.

So glad to hear there will be changes to make the site mobile-friendly – recently been away from laptop and it’s not fun looking at the site on a phone.

Look forward to seeing the changes, though I’ve always liked how the site looked anyway.
