Today was the second day of PAX Prime 2013, and I'm a little sad to report that it's been a bit disappointing.

Between the exhibitors, the play areas, the panels and everything else that happens, PAX 2013 takes up the entire building, and another one across the street. PAX 2012 had approximately 70,000 attendees, and although I haven't heard any first-day attendance figures yet, today's floor felt incredibly crowded and tight—even more so than last time. In fact, it was jam-packed to the point that it was often physically impossible to get through the halls and see the things I wanted to see.

I finished Hotline Miami (Vita) for the first time, and after rolling credits, I'm feeling quite mixed. I already wrote about it once, but this is more of a final wrap-up...

So, Mark of a Hero. Although I haven't talked about it in a while, I've still been putting time into Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate. With my wife into it as deeply as I am and my oldest son here for the summer, there's been plenty of opportunity to play multiplayer locally and I've been happy to take advantage of it. We've been chipping away at it steadily, and our overall goal is to take down the Dire Miralis before my son goes back to his mom's house… We've got about three more weeks to go, and we're feeling hopeful.

The "Boat Curse" Strikes Again!
HIGH Focusing co-op fire to quickly eliminate a boss.
LOW Endlessly respawning goons that back up one of the bosses.
WTF Why would I ever play a higher-level mission if I can't use the weapons I win there?

It's been a while since my last post, and holy cow, I can't believe how much has happened since then. In fact, I'm trying to remember the last time we had this much large-scale drama, and I honestly can't recall anything that was as major as the arc we just had.

When I was growing up, my family didn't have a lot of money. We didn't own a family console until my mom bought a Colecovision from a tag sale in 1987. Before that, my maternal grandmother's Atari VCS was sometimes available in 1979 onward when we visited or even lived there due to money troubles. I did get a VIC-20 for my birthday in 1984 and then a Commodore 64 for my middle school graduation in 1986 from my paternal grandmother, but those weren't so much game consoles as they were hybrid devices. I did own a few games for both systems, but not a significant amount.

Speaking candidly, I don't believe that anyone was ready for the numbers that we saw from NPD for the month of April... regardless of whether you're an armchair analyst like myself or whether you're a top-line professional in this business. Hardware sales numbers, in particular, were just painful to digest. It wasn't a total collapse, but when you drop by more than 40% from the past year—and when that April's comp targets weren't crazy to begin with—it just looks awful.
