Adol the Red is Back and This Time He Brought Friends

HIGH Bringing down a boss that has over 100K hit points in short order thanks to the fluid and fun combat system.

LOW Whenever the game forces players to stop killing things and advance the uninspired story.

WTF Really? A princess in disguise and a prison scene? Come on, RPG writers...

Ys Seven

Game Description: Ys SEVEN is the latest installment in the long-running Ys series which first debuted on PC in 1987. This is the first iteration to be built specifically for the PSP system, taking full advantage of the widescreen format and hardware. The battle system consists of a three-member battle party with enemies engaged on the field map in real-time for fast-paced combat. Old fans of the series and new players alike will be immersed into the rich vibrant world containing over 30 hours of gameplay.

Valkyria Chronicles II disappoints

Valkyria Chronicles II Screenshot

I absolutely adored the first Valkyria Chronicles on PS3, and felt guilty that I didn't play it in time to praise it on my top ten last year. After being reminded by a reader of that particular oversight, I figured I should probably get to the sequel this year to make sure I didn't make the same mistake again.I'm extremely early in the game so I can't speak on it definitively, but what I've seen so far is quite a mixed bag.

Knights in the Nightmare Second Opinion

Something Old, Something New

HIGH The first time I dominated an encounter after fully comprehending the battle system.

LOW Another last boss? Why can't this game just be over!

WTF Japanese developers really love their quasi-Christian bad guys.

What to play before 2011?

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Screenshot

I'm trying to decide what to tackle next… No decisions have been made yet, so I'll probably just try a few random things I've downloaded and then go to bed. However, while on the subject, it does bring up the issue of 2010—specifically, that there's only about eighty days left in it.

Consoleation: Dishonorable Embargo

Medal of Honor Screenshot

As I write this entry in the wee hours of Monday morning, there are literally dozens of reviews of Medal of Honor that have been completed and will not be read for another day or so. Meanwhile, many more consumers are looking for some sort of indication as to whether Medal of Honor is going to be worth spending $60 on… and they won't find out with much notice before the game's release. See, Electronic Arts is holding reviews hostage by way of embargoes—which basically seal away all reviews until a specified time of the publisher's choosing.

Consoleation: Q4 2010 Predictions

Medal of Honor Screenshot

Now that we're into the key final quarter of 2010, it's time to gaze into the Consoleation Crystal Ball and make some predictions as to how key hardware and software players will perform.

Toy Story 3 Review

Did You Know Bullseye Seats Two?

Toy Story 3 Screenshot

HIGH Riding Bullseye for the first time.

LOW Completing the game so soon.

WTF Kicking a villager through a U-shaped cactus to score a field goal.

Toy Story 3

Game Description: Celebrate the joy of play in Toy Story 3: The Video Game! Fans can play as Buzz, Woody or Jessie as they run, ride and fly through scenes inspired by the upcoming release of the Disney-Pixar animated film, Toy Story 3. Experience key moments, interact with new and returning characters, and visit locations seen in the film. The unique Toy Box mode allows players to unleash their imagination and creativity in a new open world and play with Andy’s toys their way. As Buzz, Woody or Jessie, players can choose what activities they want to do and the order they wish to do them. The more they use their imagination and create their own story, the more they get rewarded.

A lot of gaming between reviewing

Toy Soldiers Screenshot

I've been in a bit of a holding pattern lately. I keep waiting for specific titles for review to show up, and… none of them do. Since I hate putting something on hold when a must-review game arrives, I've been burning through a bunch of random stuff in the hopes that the UPS truck will drop something off sooner rather than later. No such luck yet. In the meantime, here's what I've been doing…
