Resident Evil: Revelations Review

The "Boat Curse" Strikes Again!

Resident Evil: Revelations Screenshot

HIGH Focusing co-op fire to quickly eliminate a boss.

LOW Endlessly respawning goons that back up one of the bosses.

WTF Why would I ever play a higher-level mission if I can't use the weapons I win there?

Shooting and missing

BioShock Infinite Screenshot

The discussion around BioShock Infinite's combat doesn't just involve the question of whether its quantity of violence is essential to the story (yes), or whether telling a story where its quantity of violence is essential is interesting or worthwhile (no). Some of the discussion has centered around the question of whether the combat mechanics are any good. Eric Schwarz has written a fantastic post that describes most of the combat mechanics, and I want to expand on it a little. Even though I think violence helps to express the kind of character Booker is, I don't think the combat systems of BioShock Infinite do much to help characterize him, and in some ways actively oppose that characterization.

Hotline Miami and a few words on used games

Hotline Miami and a few words on used games

I've heard a few developers lately talking about why they are in favor of DRM and getting rid of used games. I know this is a huge discussion and I don't really want to get into every aspect of it right here, but there are few things I need to get off my chest.

Remember Me Review

Insert "Forgettable" Cliché/Pun/Joke Here

HIGH Fantastic visual style.

LOW The invisible mutants. So many invisible mutants.

WTF For a game about memory, there are precious few memory-rewrite sequences.

Receiver Review

Save a Bullet for Yourself

HIGH Clearing a room holding 6 drones with 6 bullets.

LOW Finding absolutely nothing of use in that room, just like the seven previous.

WTF What's going on in this room full of crystal?

The Swapper Review

Alone in a Crowd

HIGH Figuring out how to get the last orb in Planet Survey.

LOW Getting stuck on a puzzle for 15 minutes because I forgot it's possible to merge oppositely-oriented clones.

WTF Hitting a gravity pad too hard, dying, and then watching my corpse ping-pong back and forth until I reloaded.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing Review

The Iterative Adventures...

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing Screenshot

HIGH "Eat Ray of Destructionnnnnnnnn!!"

LOW Multiplayer doesn't always bring people together.

WTF Did I just sell The One Ring for 3,000 gold?

Mars: War Logs Review

Mars War Slog

Mars: War Logs Screenshot

HIGH Killing the blisteringly incompetent leader of the Resistance.

LOW Having to run back and forth through a whole city repeatedly for the serial killer quest.

WTF I'm in a major city, and the best available weapon is still a metal rod with some razor blades riveted to it?

GameCritics.com Podcast Episode 92: Sports Games

In the absence of one Brad Gallaway, the GC crew is finally free to delve into our sports fandom and how it relates to gaming. Join us as we discuss traditional sports and video games, our past memories of the genre, and how it suffers from the same "AAA diesease" as the rest of the industry. Featuring Richard Naik, Chi Kong Lui, Mike Bracken, and Michael Cunningham.
