What exactly is a "concept game?" A concept game is one that, rather than simply being a game that requires players to learn how to operate controls so that they can complete objectives and eventually reach the 'ending', tries to create an overall game "experience," where every element works together to further the illusion. Some games that fall into this genre are the recent Rez
, with its bizarre world where light and sound become one, or The Getaway
, in which the developers attempted to remove everything characteristic of videogames in order to create the first fully playable movie.

Considering that the source material is a venerable classic of dramatic filmmaking, a game based on the 1963 masterpiece The Great Escape seems overdue. It possesses all of the drama, humanity, and suspense to make an engaging videogame (as long as a few liberties are taken with the plot, of course).
Game Description: You will command four unique soldiers, each with their own skills, strengths, and stories through their capture, escape, and vengeance in the heart of the evil Nazi empire. Use advanced espionage skills in stealth missions, a wide variety of weapons in combat sorties, and a huge array of authentic vehicles in your fight for freedom. Superstar Steve McQueen is digitally resurrected for the fistfights, shootouts, and vehicular mayhem of this WWII classic. You are the new mastermind in this saga of indomitable spirit and daring heroism, can you pull off The Great Escape?

Perhaps such middle-of-the-road gameplay alone does not make the game "a worthwhile experience" (as Matt puts it), but, coupled with the directorial flourishes and aesthetic flair of Konami's immensely skilled development team, Silent Hill 3 is never less than compelling right through to its conclusion.

One school of thought says that videogames are pure entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. Taking a different view, some suggest that the power of a well-crafted interactive experience can be more significant than an afternoon of frivolous distraction. The answer likely lies somewhere in between, but for any game, it's important to consider the content and the context in which it is couched.
Game Description: Freedom: The Battle for Liberty Island is set in a world where the Soviet Union won the Cold War. Now a fierce conflict is beginning to unfold in the streets of America. Red Army troops are pouring across the borders of Mexico and Canada shortly after a nuclear missile is unleashed on Washington D.C. Chaos sets in when breaking news informs Americans that their President has been killed and the Russians have invaded the country. Players take on the role of a blue-collar worker who evolves into a charismatic and fearless freedom fighter obsessed with finding and freeing his brother, who has been taken hostage along with other New Yorkers by the Soviets. You must recruit and lead an army of urban guerillas to take on the Soviet threat in the streets of New York City.
