WWF No Mercy – Consumer Guide

Dale Weir's picture

According to ESRB, this game contains: Animated Violence, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes

Parents will have the usual objections to the blood, violence, and profanity that come with the WWF license, but there is also the issue of the sexually suggestive material in the game as well. Although the women in the game do wrestle and the powerful Chyna is an ideal role model, most of the other female cast members are treated more like window dressing. Sporting skimpy outfits or bikinis that leave little to imagination, the portrayal of women is sure to irk a few conservative types. To top things off, there is also a healthy serving of racial and ethnic stereotyping to go with the sexual content -- so be warned.

Wrestling fans have two competent wrestling games to choose from in WWF Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role and WWF No Mercy. Either choice is a win-win situation, but No Mercy will be considered by many to be the better of the two. The gameplay in Smackdown! 2 has a much quicker pace and tighter feel (unlike No Mercy, there are no marathon matches). There's also more customizations and options for Create-a-Wrestler and multiplayer modes. However, No Mercy is a more polished release. The overall menu interface, graphics, and animation are cleaner. It sports a larger roster of wrestlers and a comparable selection of venues. What takes it over the top is its wonderful career mode that has more diverse and consistent action. Staged events and stories occur during the game that McMahon himself couldn't think up on a good day and generally more interesting than what you get in Smackdown! 2. If we had to choose between the two titles, we'd say No Mercy has the one-player experience with the career modes and Smackdown! 2 has the better multiplayer features with the season mode that allows up to eight players to compete or team-up for rankings and the ultimate prize, the championship belt.
