Can Mortal Kombat survive without the ultraviolence?

Mortal Kombat Screenshot

I've been putting a good amount of time into the new Mortal Kombat, and if you read this blog, you'll know I'm a fan of this latest iteration. I have much admiration for the work that NetherRealm Studios has put into the project, and in my view, this is the best Mortal Kombat of them all, bar none.

Fight Night Champion Review

As Goes the Heavyweights, So Goes Boxing

Fight Night Champion Screenshot

HIGH Brian Kenny's soft hair reporting on my last fight.

LOW Controlling a fight for nine rounds, only to be instantly knocked out by poor collision detection.

WTF The feeling of watching my boxer, with my face, get pummeled mercilessly into unconsciousness.

Consoleation: The war on used games—greed-ality!

Mortal Kombat Screenshot

I was excited for Mortal Kombat. The demo played pretty well, albeit a little on the slow side. The special editions of the game looked pretty neat. It felt like a throwback rather than an attempt to keep expanding in the direction that the games took during the last console generation. It seemed like a day-one purchase for me, if only to support the revival of a fighting game that used to share the spotlight with Street Fighter some 15 years ago.

Knights Contract Review

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Knights Contract Screenshot

HIGH Ping-ponging a room full of enemies with a combination of spell and scythe, and watching them all meet their grisly fate simultaneously, tangled in the vines of Mag Mell's Rose.

LOW Getting knocked down a hole after failing a boss QTE 20 times.

WTF For being upset at having to execute all of her sisters, Gretchen sure seems to love making a graphic display of their demise.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Review

Three Hundred Hours and Still Going Strong

HIGH A skin-of-my-teeth victory after a knock-down, drag-out, forty-five minute battle.

LOW Struggling to survive the nasty dual Tigrex mission... Twice.

WTF Watching my Felyne companion get the game-winning hit in on the last boss.

Video: Super Smash Land Demo 2 makes us ponder what might have been

This is the second trailer—don't know how I missed the first trailer—of fan-made Super Smash Land. Essentially its Super Smash Bros. remade as a Game Boy game and available for the PC. Yeah, I know we were all asking for this ever since the Nintendo 64 original, but you know that Nintendo can drag its feet when it comes to giving the fans what they want.

Right now, Dan Fornace's Smash Bros. demake is only available as a demo and only features Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link. But Fornace promises the final game will be completed soon and support more modes than one should expect from a game made by one person.

Cosplay: Street Fighter's Ryu... with actual Hadoken

Street Fighter II - Ryu cosplay

Since many of you are playing Marvel vs Capcom 3, I thought you'd appreciate some Ryu cosplay. As cosplay goes, you have to give this guy the prize for actually producing a fireball for the photo shoot.

Left-Handed? What's That?

The Fight: Lights Out Screenshot

You may have not heard it by now, but I kinda love the PlayStation Move. Sure it's derivative, but that's easy to forgive considering how effectively it fulfills the promise of motion controllers that was only hinted at with the Wii. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I went ahead and bought a second Move want in anticipation for The Fight: Lights Out.

God of War III sucks more, Fly Fu, and Trine: Path to New Dawn

Fly Fu (PlayStation Portable Mini) - I fell in love with this game's graphic style, but it plays like garbage.
