Chase: Hollywood Stunt Driver – Review

Presumably released to compete against Stuntman, Chase is the namesake of (obviously) a Hollywood stunt driver whom you guide through various movie "scenes." This is not a game concept that developers have an easy time filling out with creative gameplay ideas, and Chase is hard evidence of that unfortunate fact.

Mega Man Zero – Second Opinion

So here is a game that centers on a race of human mimicking robots, known as reploids. They are identical to humans in every way, save for the inner circuitry, and have even managed to display signs of emotions. They also happen to be struggling for their self-preservation due to the fact that a human government has ordered, seeing them as a threat, to dispose of every last one of them, an action referred to here not as murder or execution but as "retirement"...

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner – Review

Loyal readers of the site may recall my less-than-favorable review of the original Zone Of The Enders back in 2001. Despite a great battle engine and the attachment of Hideo Kojima's name, it was a shallow bore that sold more copies than it deserved thanks to a massive wave of hyperbole and the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo disc it was packaged with. The project was massively unsatisfying, and I couldn't understand why an illustrious house like Konami would release such a half-baked product. Evidently, someone at Konami HQ must have been thinking the same thing.

Vexx – Review

The inexplicable floating demons on the title screen. The still beating hearts that replace the "cutesy" stars and shines of the Mario games. Even the way that Vexx seems to have a permanent scowl on his face throughout the game. It all smacks of a flimsy facade placed on a boilerplate platforming game.

Final Fantasy IX – Second Opinion

I've always thought I could enjoy any game so long as it was a feast of sight and sound, not frustratingly difficult, and filled with enough diverting gameplay to keep my mind off the responsibilties of day-to-day existence. I'm also a fan of the production values and atmosphere of console role-playing games (RPGs) in general and the Final Fantasy series especially. So when Final Fantasy IX was released, I was sure I was going to love it.

As a child, I was scared of a lot of things. I'm sure if I were 11 years old and playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the manic look on a moblin's face would haunt my nights. Some of the bosses are positively menacing. Even the thunderstorms in the game would make me think about how scary storm winds and lighting really are. That's if I was 11 years old.

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb – Review

Seeing Raiders Of The Lost Ark in a theater in 1981 was a seminal moment for me. I was 12 at the time, still two years away from kissing a girl, three years away from learning how to drive, and desperately trying to figure out How To Be A Man. My father, with his tendency to focus on my inadequacies, wasn't much help, but Indiana Jones—this swashbuckler, this cad, this charming rogue—was.

Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis – Second Opinion

Let's get this out of the way: Tactics Ogre: Knight Of Lodis is an excellent game. Mike nailed most of the important points about this game. If I may, I would draw a parallel to another GBA game, Golden Sun. Like Golden Sun, Knight Of Lodis is a modern reinvention of 16-bit play mechanics.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter – Review

Ultimately, though, Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter is a slightly better than average game that coasts along on the fact that it tweaks the traditional RPG formula. The innovations in the title are a hit-and-miss affair that generally obfuscate the fact that the game is little more than a traditional dungeon crawler with a few new wrinkles.

Pro Race Driver – Review

This game reminded me that, as hard as it may be to believe judging by other titles of the same genre, the racing world isn't governed by cars but by people. As a result, Pro Race Driver's realism comes in the way it humanizes racing.
