Re: 50 games in 2014

It's the half way point for the year, and I'm nowhere near half way through my goal. I've completed 14 games so far, which means I'm on track to only finish 28 by the end of the year. I have to play almost three times as many games in the second half of the year as I did in the first. Hmm...

The biggest unexpected challenge has been building up the motivation to start new games. Last year I spent hundreds of hours playing Skyrim, Mass Effect, and XCom, and figured that if I put those same hours into shorter games it should be no problem meeting my goal. But I find it's way easier to keep my momentum going in a long game I know I love than to take chances on a new game every week. I'm having a lot of fun trying new things, but I'm also spending fewer hours gaming than I usually do.

Actually, I'd have to find two new games to start each week, unless I wanted to commit to finishing games even if I wasn't enjoying them. Hmm..

I'm going to keep going and see where I get by the year's end. I finished 26 books in a year when I made a similar resolution about reading, and I'll be happy if I end up in a similar place with games. It will still be many more games than I typically finish in a year.

New games played since the quarterly update, if you're interested:

Beyond: Two Souls
Child of Light
2048
The Last of Us
Mario Kart 8
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
The Swapper

Re: 50 games in 2014

I'm not quite sure how many games I've completed this year. I have played through the entire Mass Effect Trilogy on the PS3, ICO HD (PS3) and a little bit of everything else. I'm hoping to finish Final Fantasy X (HD) on the PS3 in a couple of weeks.

I'm already more impressed with your list. I've been working my way through the Mass Effect trilogy for three years now.

Fourteen games is pretty impressive, you have to admit. It's only not impressive when you compare it to the 26 games you should have played by now, which isn't really a fair comparison!

I see this latest quarter includes many 'longer' games - have you no inclination to blast through some of the shorter ones on your list? *Cough* To the Moon *Cough*

Re: 50 games in 2014

Time to eat crow. I gave up about eight months into the year when I realized I had no hope of meeting my goal. I gave up so hard that I started actively avoiding short games in those final months in case I ever wanted to try the same resolution again. Shameful. In the end, I only completed 25 games.

I may try the same resolution again this year, but I'm going to be much more quiet about it.

Happy 2015 everyone!

50% on the first try, not so bad You can aim for 75% this year

Happy 2015 and let's hope the gaming year will be better...

Re: 50 games in 2014

Setting realistic goals saves you from the trouble of disappointing yourself and trying to turn your hobby in some kind of annoying work?
But going for higher goals is probably something like those adventures; jumping on a bike and cycle from Europe to Shanghai or something like that? Leaving any comfort zone and trying new limits?

Whatever makes one happy, i guess.

a rough bodycount what i played:
"properly" played (10+ hours)
17

didn't like almost immediately
12 (usually not an hour)

in between stuff
not finished, maybe will get back later, maybe never
14

Obviously finishing 25 let alone 50 is hardly a goal i would ever try.
For that i'm way too much an achievement whore that tries to accept as many challenges as possible a game, i like, throws at me.

Re: 50 games in 2014

It looks like I finished 20 games last year:

Hammerwatch
Metro Last Light
Dark Souls II
Fez
Call of Juarez Gunslinger
Transistor
Trine 2 Complete
Pigsy's Perfect 10 DLC
Shadowrun Returns
Lords of the Fallen
Kentucky Route Zero, Act 3
Valiant Hearts - The Great War
Remember Me
Nihilumbra
Lifeless Planet
Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes
Proteus
Banner Saga
Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Plus 5 games with no 'end state' as such but as 'finished' as they could be:

Madden 15
Banished
Desert Golfing
OOTP 15
The Golf Club

Played for significant time but didn't finish:

Dayz
Diablo III
Divinity Original Sin
Don Bradman Cricket 14
Eidolon
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Rogue Legacy
Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall
Shadows of Mordor
The Road Not Taken
Threes
Pinball Arcade Season 1
Alien Isolation
The Last Federation

Glanced at:

The Swapper
King of Dragon Pass (iOS)
MLB The Show
Velocity x2
Stick it to the Man
Pix the Cat
Spelunky
Fifa
Binding of Isaac

I'm happy enough with the 'glanced at' category which I thought would be bigger - there are 2 triple A games that I paid full price for there and barely played but that is ok, could have been worse.
