Re: What are you playing right now?

You can try out Mechwarrior Online, it's free to play and you can look for "Victor Rykers", which is me, to play with/against

Thanks for the recommendation- I assume that's a PC game? I'll look into what specs it requires, and assuming my laptop can handle it, will certainly give it a try!

Re: What are you playing right now?

Yes, on PC and runs on the cry-engine so I'm not sure what the hardware specs are. Can your laptop handle Crysis? It's not as intensive as Crytek's tech demos which are sold at full retail price though.

In Mechwarrior Online there is no respawning, if your Mech get's taken out that's it for the round and you can only spectate. On the plus side a Mech can take quite a beating before going down, so it's usually not the case that you get a headshot at the beginning of the round and watch others play for 10 minutes. But it does cater to more tactical and careful play, rather than all guns blazing.

There are 2 game modes right now: Assault (kill them all!) and Conquest (capture 5 resource nodes across the map, first team to get 750 points or is last standing wins).

Re: What are you playing right now?

Impressions of a match of MWO yesterday:

8 vs. 8 Mechs with game mode conquest on a map with a lot of ravines but otherwise good visibility and an average temperature about 20 degrees centigrade.
Visibility varies quite considerably for different maps and require use of different sensor modes, e.g. heat sensors with fog or snowfall, night vision during night fights. High temperature limits the use of energy weapons due to threat of overheating the Mech.

We started out taking 2 objectives, which put us at 3 in total (including the base) and things turned into an all-out battle for the centre of the map. At some point Mechs began to fall rather quickly, as the big brawlers were closing in at each other, exchanging barrages at close distance like ice hockey players like to do http://youtu.be/N1-25s4uwFQ?t=45s

Having one objective in my back and secure, I approach the central objective, suddenly realizing it's oddly empty on the battlefield. Reaching the top, a pristine looking Stalker stands right in front of me. That 85 ton monster can rip my 50 ton Trebuchet apart quite easily, hence I accelerate, dodging the first salvo barely by racing behind a rock formation. A quick glance at the map: we're ahead in terms of score, but currently loosing an objective and I'm the only Mech left on my team, while the others have not only the Stalker but also a 65 ton Catapult still running, which immediately sends a salvo of long range missiles in my direction to confirm his existence.

He doesn't pursue me though, but is racing for the objective I was guarding instead. The Stalker stalks me however. A salvo of lasers on my back is motivation enough to keep running and jump down into the next ravine to break line of sight. I run to the enemy base to capture it, while I see the score advantage rapidly melting. Just as the base get's turned in our favour, the Stalker shows up on my sensors, making is entrance with laser and missile fire. What follows is a dance around the objective, which I use as cover and an exchange of lasers and short range missiles just as I get the message that my team is about to win. The Catapult, done capturing the other objective, is also closing in and starts firing lasers at long distance, but to no effect. It seems he ran out if missiles! Just seconds before the Catapult comes close enough that they could flank me, finishing my game of cat and mouse, the resource counter reaches 750 to 748, resulting in the closest win I saw so far

Re: What are you playing right now?

Li-Ion: what's with the Chaos Blade playthrough? Just a challenge?

QXZ, JLB: from hearsay, I thought BlopsII was the most broken of the lot. I don't play it myself, but a lot of online friends seem to have given up on it.

Me: I forgot my mouse at home after the long weekend, and keep forgetting to take one from work. So I am not playing Kentucky Route Zero Part II, but I am looking forward to it a lot.

Instead I am playing Bulletstorm. I'd given this a miss up till now, because I thought it was pretty much, "Shut your dick, or I'll kill your dick, mother dicker".

How wrong I was! Flat out the most inventive shooter I've ever played. It's all run and gun, tongue in cheek, non stop action. Great environments, neat mechanics, nice send-up of shooters. One of the levels is simply the best thing I've ever done in a shooter. Highly recommended if you see it for cheap.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Never really put my laptop through it's paces- I've mostly used it for indie games. Always been very cautious when it comes to buying games for it. It's a very good laptop for the price I paid for it, but it is still just a laptop...

Just tried the State Of Decay demo. I lowered my expectations beforehand. As ambitious as it sounds, it is still just an Xbox Arcade game. Really enjoyed it, reminds me of Dead Rising, if it was less silly and much more tactical, crossed with the good bits of Deadly Premonition (ie the open-world town). The map seems pretty huge for an Xbox Arcade game, and will be buying this. If it had co-op, I'd be even happier with it, but there's a chance that's coming in the future, apparently.

Thanks for the advice btw, Pedro. Won't be buying Black Ops 2, despite my Dad-in-law trying to convince me otherwise! Bullerstorm is a game I've been meaning to try, and if you enjoy it, it's definitely motivated me to try and pick up a copy cheap.

[EDIT] Forgot to mention how much fun I'm still having in online Red Dead Redemption. Highlight thus far- Being shot off my horse by another player, one bullet in the head from him away from death, as he's stood over me. Then my mate rides along on his horse, knocks my pursuer over, allowing me to recover and finish him off with a shotgun blast to the face. Conicidentally, the moment my friend came riding along, the music suddenly became much more vibrant and upbeat. What a moment. Low point? Said friend encouraging me to look down on an enemy group from a cliff, and then pushing me off it.

[EDIT 2] Decided to go ahead and purchase State of Decay. So far, it's a great little game. And, to add to my above description, I'd also say there were elements of the home console Harvest Moon games in there- the often calming acoustic soundtrack for the quiter moments, combined with base building and resource gathering, remind me of Harvest Moon, strangely. Really looking forward to seeing if any of you guys play it, and what you think.

Curiosity, mostly. I just try out different weapons I haven't looked at so far. And to my surprise the Chaos Blade is awesome with 10+ humanity for extra damage. My challenge run is the ongoing SL1 run where I'm now in front of Manus and Kalameet, before heading for the Four Kings again, which are my last hurdle to get to Gwyn. After that I'm planning a no-shield run. Not sure if I should make it ninja or Conan-themed. Let's see how that turns out.

Re: What are you playing right now?

I downloaded the US version of Demon's Souls and played through the first level last night. Those blue-eyed knights are quite the battle when you are as weak as a baby.

Chose Temple Knight class, a dude with a halberd and a Heal miracle. Hard to get used to the halberd's moveset and my guy is clumsy. Good fun.

With this fracas over the next gen consoles, I feel like its a viable alternative to just buy a cheap backup PS3 and use it to replay games from this generation. I have replayed Red Dead, Deadly Premonition, and Demon's Souls this year and had a ton of fun with them.

I plan on keeping my Xbox, and probably buying another when that breaks. I swear, I must be the only guy in the world who's partner was, today, trying to talk me into buying an Xbox One, and me putting my foot down on the matter. "Microsoft can fuck right off", indeed.

Yes, I'm aware I will be giving Microsoft money by my continued use of the Xbox 360 range, but the way I see it, I'm rewarding them with my money for the stuff they do right.

Red Dead Redemption multiplayer. Just had someone trying to talk to me, and after not replying, was told I'm a peadophile. I'm starting to see the negative side of the Xbox Live community.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Ha ha, people are the worst. The online gamer is a purer version of ourselves, without any civilising influences.

It's not just Xbox Live, don't worry. If I have a game of Madden with a randomer online, they are 95% certain to cheat. As far as I can tell, the only way to play multiplayer is with people you know.

I started playing Kentucky Route Zero ep. II last night; I don't know if I was just in a cranky mood, but it seems to be much more full-on or obvious than the first installment. I stopped playing and will give it another go today.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Flamelurker is down! Only took me two tries (the first was when I had him down to a little bit of health, tried to finish him with a two handed strike, missed, got stuck in a menu when trying to switch back to my shield, got pummelled. Classic Demon's Souls).

Re: What are you playing right now?

This may come as a shock, but I've dusted off an old Nintendo 64 and I've been playing Perfect Dark for the first time in years.

All I have to say is... wow. Even though the N64 hardware can't properly handle the game's heaviest action, Perfect Dark has aged remarkably well. This isn't because of the campaign mode, because I have always hated how it ends (spoiler: you're not shooting humans anymore)

What I do love about Perfect Dark -- and still love about it -- is the weaponry. I love firing a well-placed head shot that scores a one-hit kill, be it from a Magnum or a machine gun. I love being able to transform hand grenades into bouncy proximity bombs. I still get a sadistic glee from converting the game's Laptop Gun into a sentry turret. Perfect Dark is pure gun porn, plain and simple

Re: What are you playing right now?

After a couple week's hiatus, and I've gone back to [/i]Call of Duty: Black Oops 2[/i]... er... Black Ops 2, and it appears that I'm not going to be spending much more time with it. A couple weeks ago, I had mentioned some of the multiplayer mode's problems, and had stated that "the jury's still out on whether or not [the attack dogs are ] completely broken". Well, the jury's reached a verdict, and the overwhelming majority says "broken!"

Just to give you an idea as to why this conclusion was rached, in the first Black Ops game, if an enemy team in multiplayer called in enemy doges, it was possible to find a hiding place, defend it with a claymore, and have the mutts trigger an explosion. In Black Ops 2, even if you do find a nice place to brace for contact, enemy dogs can harmlessly pass by any shock charges or proximity explosives that can temporarily paralyze, injure, or kill a human enemy.

Such a shame. To be honest, even as a COD n00b, I didn't find it too difficult to defend against dogs just using a knife in BlOps, but that just sounds like the game is plain broken. Still on the fence about buying it, I hear the new zombies mode is really good.

Re: What are you playing right now?

I am thinking of buying The Last of Us this week, so I finally decided to give Fifa 13 (which has been pretty much unplayed for several months) a go, to see if it would stick, or I could trade it.

Ach, it's too difficult - I can't justify the time I would need to learn it, and I've actually started to dislike soccer as a sport, so I think I'll trade it. I can see it being really good if you're a fan, but I think it would take me 30+ hours to get where I want to be with it. I hate giving up on it as it is a challenge, but ultimately I think it's not worth it.

I've also been playing Drox Operative, which is a lot of fun. It's an ARPG set in space, where you control a spacecraft that you can upgrade - thrusters, weapons, shields, crew etc, all while trying to manage power requirements.

You're a kind of warrior spy who is inserted into various sectors in order to keep harmony (or wipe out) all the alien races in that sector. You can win military, economic, diplomatic victories and it's up to you how you do that - ally with some races to wipe out others, try and make everybody get along, or just wipe out everyone yourself.

It is interesting, and there is a demo here
