Re: What are you playing right now?

I have tried Borderlands on PC (still on my laptop, in fact). I certainly wouldn't want to play it through on my own, but am I right in thinking that the split-screen is basically just the same as the single player mode anyway? This is it's main appeal...

Re: What are you playing right now?

Yes, the co-op is the same as the main campaign.

Logged into Demon's Souls to try and take advantage of the White World Tendency event to celebrate its launch on PSN. However the world tendency is definitely far from white.

Aaaaarrrrrgggghhh:

Namco Bandai has announced that the European version of Demonís Souls on the PSN will be released on January 23rd 2013.

The date is a couple of days after the release of the US version which hits next Tuesday.

The US version will cost $19.99 with EU pricing yet to be announced.
Well fuck that.

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for DS

exceptionally well done implementation of hack & slash with touch controls. Fun!

Re: What are you playing right now?

A little Mark of the Ninja on PC. Hmm, not sure what all the fuss is about....seems a fairly straightforward platformer to me.

Also, some Okami HD on the PS3. I had this for the Wii once, and kinda forgot how annoying it was. Follows the Zelda template of having an extremely talkative escort - in this case a flea - whose dialogue you can't skip. Maddening.

It does look pretty though, and the wolf is a pretty cool protagonist. Possibly because he doesn't speak.

Not sure if I will finish these two games; looking doubtful.

Dead Island (360): about 60% through the main story. Enjoyable, mindless fun. Even getting "lost" playing some of the side missions. Heard the game is notorious for glitches, but so far only had one. Was early on and not too big of a deal.

Next up will be Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii).

Re: What are you playing right now?

I'm still not playing much. On occasion I play the odd game of Drop 7 when waiting for a bus or train, but no games that ask a serious time investment. I'd have stuff like Yakuza 3 lying around, still in shrink-wrap, but I don't see myself putting in the hours it would need to play through this at this point. Also, I'm changing jobs and by that countries quite soon, so I'll have a lot of other stuff to do shortly.

I must really try and finish this.

Still playing Okami on PS3 - I've actually settled into it a bit, and am enjoying the music and visuals, and it's getting a bit more inventive as it goes on. I am actually seeing parallels between this and Dark Souls. However I have now met the first boss, the Spider Queen (Quelaag), and I don't know if I have the will to continue. There's a lot of emphasis on drawing stuff with the brush, which is quite imprecise sometimes, and frustrating.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Played a bit of FTL today. With a bit I mean the first sector. On easy. Still a solid entry on my best of 2012 list.

I was thinking on getting Far Cry 3, but I hear more and more negatives, hence I'll wait until it drops further in price. I'm still not feeling the urge to play more, at least I have internet again and by that my steam list of games. I could work on my back-catalogue. But I have no clear idea where to start.

Thanks! I'm currently watching Doctor Who to prepare for the culture shock (yes, I'm heading for the British Isles )

Re: What are you playing right now?

Wow, the British Isles! That may be quite the culture shock, no matter which country you go to....the only one I'd feel bad for you would be N. Ireland, though England is probably challenging enough too, culture-wise.

(Only joking, English people! You are lovely really)

The big question - are you taking your desktop?

Re: What are you playing right now?

Congratulations on the big change, man. Hope it goes well!

Civilisation V. Probably shouldn't have started right at the beginning of my set of days at work, but I have twelve days off very soon, and very much look forward to having the evenings swallowed up by this game.

Taking a while to get to grips with. I'm definitely going to have to find a Civilisation wiki to help me out. I've got the basics down, but this game is so different from Civ 3 (my only real familiarity with the series).

Already mentioned in earlier post, but started Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) yesterday. So far so good.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Been playing a bit of Demon's Souls, and inching towards the Platinum. I think it is going to defeat me though.

At the moment I'm trying to move my character tendency towards Pure White by defeating the named Black Phantoms. You're not allowed to defeat them by cheesing or your character tendency won't shift - no Acid Cloud, Soulsucker, Poison Mist...and no booting them off ledges.

First up was Scrvir, and after about 90 minutes of getting my ass handed to me, the red mist descended, and I booted him off a ledge....complete waste of time.

I'm now at BP Selen in the swamp......it is not going well. Not at all.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Hello?

Is this thing on?

I'm away for the weekend, but have been playing Demon's Souls all week, as mentioned above. It really is an astonishing game.

I think Li-Ion was wrong when he said Dark was the better game.

I am having huge issues shifting my character tendency to white - I have killed 3 Black Phantoms with bows now, and I'm not moving towards White. I can't find anything on the web about it, but I assume using a bow counts as the same sort of cheesing as mentioned above. Annoying.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Spec Ops: The Line

Needed to use my HMV card quickly, but the selection of games was dire (understandable, with what the chain is going through right now). I picked this game up after remembering a couple of you guys saying good things.

So far- I love it. Good, solid shooting and cover mechanics, I really like the (admittedly very limited) orders you can give your squad... And I was overjoyed with one moment so far. At one point, the player has to fight into a building, and Deep Purple's "Hush" is playing in the background. I'm a DP fan (snigger) anyway, but the strange contrast between the music, the setting, and what's happening works wonderfully.

Also started Vanquish on hard mode. Stuck on the argus core. This game is rock hard. Been put on the shelf whilst I play Spec Ops.

I stand by my judgement that Dark is the better game. Demon's has a lot of game mechanisms that don't really work. Prime example the tendency system, which is completely screwed up the second you go online. But since the online component is such a great part of the game you essentially have to decide if you want to complete the game with everything it has to offer (by playing offline), or have fun with the online component and hope that one day they'll do a black or white tendency event, so that you can finally see all parts of the level.

Exploring the levels is also much more fun in Dark, thanks to the addition of jumping. In Demon's it was only possible to take certain shortcuts at certain parts of a level. In Dark you can circumvent e.g. large parts of the castle in Anor Londo with a well-timed jump. Also melee and magic are better balanced in Dark. More importantly: in Dark the character is much quicker on ladders and can slide down ladders. This gameplay change alone is already worth all the praise in the world once you go through the game a second or third time

Demon's has some wonderful levels and I think some of the level design is stronger than in Dark. Especially the Tower of Latria, which I consider one of the best levels in any video game ever made. Dark has some sections that are oddly "empty" at times and is less diverse in terms of levels. On the other hand: Dark has better boss fights, especially the ones from the DLC (Kalameet, Artorias, Manus) are amazing. A surprising number of bossfights in Demon's are a bit gimmicky.

Hence, overall I think Dark is the better game. The game mechanics are just a bit more polished overall and don't counteract each other like in some cases in Demon's.

Of course, can't leave without it

@JLB thanks for the wishes and have fun with Spec Ops, I'd buy its Soundtrack in a heartbeat if they would sell it.
