Re: Post here when you beat a game. I mean it!

I need to stay focused. I started to play Max Payne 3 and Shadow of the Damned recently. Both seem like easy games to finish, but I get distracted by games that don't really have an end in sight (sports and multiplayer shooters).

I have to get back to Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls, and Skyrim at some point.

The fall rush is just around the corner too. There are some big games next month. Sleeping Dogs is the game I am most excited for.

The Walking Dead, Part I.

Man, what an annoying control scheme (on PC). Still, I got it in the Steam sale (my only purchase, woo!) at 40% off so all is good. I wouldn't have bought it at full price, and had no real interest in it but it was quite enjoyable and nicely done with the comic book look etc.

Spec Ops: the Line

Urgh, tough one. While the gameplay was pretty tedious (is there anything worse in gaming than the last 3 levels of an FPS?), I really liked what they tried to do there. When the premiere shooter is being advertised by Oliver North, it's refreshing to see some developers attempt to do something different with the genre.

Unfortunately, they largely fail, IMO. The story they tell just doesn't make any sense in the end.

I found the game to be quite difficult on Normal; I loved the environments - the decadent opulence of Dubai really came across well - and I liked that you had to make questionable decisions to proceed. I would recommend it, just to see what they have done, even though the game was a bit of a slog at times.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for their next game, and I am impressed at 2K for publishing this - I'd imagine pitching this game was a nightmare, so kudos for the big publisher who took it on.

Papo & Yo (PSN)

When I finished it, I thought it was 'alright', but overnight, my subconcious brain seems to have elevated it to 'brilliant' status.

Really good. Bits of platforming and puzzle solving in order to build those platforms. Not overdone. Audiovisually, fantastic - and if you like your game settings to be a wee bit different and stimulating, then you should get this.

Recommend.

Phoenix Wright: Justice for All

I love the continuity of this series. You can't help but feel connected to the characters.

It's good. It's just not a game. It's more an interactive story (or digital choose your own adventure-book). Anyone who thought Journey failed as a game shouldn't even come within a mile of 30 Flights of Loving.

Re: Post here when you beat a game. I mean it!

Batman:Arkham Asylum on hard mode... Wasn't really that hard.

As I described in the "currently playing" thread, the jumps in difficulty only seem to be a lack of visual warning when about to be attacked, making it harder, in theory, to counter attack, and a slightly higher awareness of armed guards whilst you're doing the whole stealth thing. The former wasn't a problem, as it's normally obvious from the way the baddies are moving when they will attack (they all seem to fight in a melodramatic way, like they're from the camp 1960's Batman television show featuring Adam West), and the ONLY time the lack of visual warning really added to the difficulty was during the Poison Ivy fight, where the camera is panned out a lot further than normal. Sitting closer to the TV rectified this.

As for the stealth sections, they felt more satisfying than I remember, but your enemies still felt robotic and unhuman. I mean, seriously, they NEVER check the conveniently placed gargoyles in every stealth room, unless they actually see Batman escape to one? Batman can make a ton of noise taking a grate of a wall, but the guards won't check? I really had a lot less fun playing the game this time round, and this is before we even get to the monotonous boss fights, and the fact that the auto-explode upgrade for the gel is not only useless, but actually *limits* your tactics more than if you don't choose it as an upgrade...

Still a good game, but I'm not entirely sure it's deserving of the title of a great one. I had a fantastic time playing it- the melee combat, imparticular, is excellent. It all feels solid, and there are very few "bad" design choices. Whilst I didn't enjoy any of the new characters, the majority of what they've done with existing Batman lore was very pleasing, and I say this as a huge fan of the comic books (with the exception of Harley Quinn's new look- I approve of the tits, but give me the more ridiculous, OTT original costume any day). I also got into the Riddler's challenge's more this time, and as side quests in games go, I had a lot of fun with that. It's just not the game I remembered.

Bit annoyed that the GOTY edition of Arkham City has now been delayed until November rather than this month, but I'm certainly no less looking forward to that game than I was (further damage done to Ms. Quinn's dress sense, aside). I just really hope the army I'm up against in AC act more like people, rather than every armed guard confrontation feeling like a big, violent puzzle.

Re: Post here when you beat a game. I mean it!

I thought Gravity Bone was fine; at least there was a story. You had to....ummm...find a spy or something.

I had no idea what was going on with 30 Flights. I just assumed I was getting old.

Spec Ops: the Line

Wow, this game was not fun. But it's phenomenal with what it tries to do and IMHO in large parts succeeds. Two thumbs up. I can't say all that much more without jumping deep into spoiler territory.

It's single player can be easily finished in a weekend. I recommend giving it a rent and check it out or grabbing it at the bargain bin.

Re: Post here when you beat a game. I mean it!

Finally beat Bioshock. Alright game, but went on far too long. Most of my thoughts on it are on the other thread, so won't repeat myself. But the escort bit wasn't as bad as I thought, and the final boss was laughably easy. Glad I played it, but it's such an over- rated title.
