2011 Community GOTY

Now that all the big releases are out, I thought it would be fun to see which game(s) the GameCritic's community think are the best of the year. List your favorites games from 2011 in order from most liked to least liked (up to 5) and I'll tally the results after some time has passed.

Standing so far:

1) Dark Souls
2) Skyrim
t3) Radient Historia
t3) Deus Ex:Human Revolution
5) Modern Warfare 3

My favorite of the year:

1) Skyrim
2) MW3
3) uncharted 3
4) mortal kombat

Re: 2011 Community GOTY

Hmmm... Ask me again after I have a chance to play all of the games that I want to get to that were released this year. Can we do this poll, say, July 2012?

Re: 2011 Community GOTY

My GOTY is Dark Souls, no doubt about it.
Runners up: Deus Ex Human Revolution, Frozen Synapse

Now to my annual categories (plus some extra):

Most time spent at character creation: Dragon Age 2

Best story: Witcher 2
Runners up: Deus Ex Human Revolution, Frozen Synapse

Most disappointing story: Crysis 2
(after all the hype they created around other FPS having bad stories, the plot of Crysis 2 was pretty forgettable)

Best ending: Frozen Synapse

Worst ending: the decide-athon 4000 at the end of Deus Ex Human Revolution

Funniest game: Magicka

Most aggravating bossfights: Witcher 2
Runner up: first boss in Deus Ex Human Revolution

Most disappointing bossfights: Deus Ex Human Revolution
Runner up: Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine

Best multiplayer, co-op: Magicka
Runner up: Modern Warfare 3 Spec Ops

Best multiplayer, competitive: Frozen Synapse
Runner up: Brink (if it wouldn't have been so broken at launch)

Least subtle Nazi-references: Killzone 3

Least playable at launch: Magicka
Runner up: Brink

Most annoying DLC advertising: Dirt 3

Best (free) DLC: Gran Turismo 5 Spec 2.0

Most annoying DRM: Ubisoft game launcher "UPlay" (no, I don't...)
Runner up: Games for Windows Live

The 'what is the internet on about?' award for game everyone seems to hate but which I enjoyed quite a lot: Dragon Age 2

The 'what is the internet on about?' award for game everyone seems to love but which I didn't get along with: Limbo
Runner up: Portal 2

Most angry words shouted at TV due to difficulty:Dark Souls
Follow up: last mission of Killzone 3

Least interactive game: Uncharted 3
Runner up: almost every modern military shooter

Worst punchline to a 15 year joke: Duke Nukem Forever

Medal of Honor-Award for most awesome beards: Skyrim

Biggest disappointment: Crysis 2
Runner up: Homefront, Duke Nukem Forever, Portal 2

(presumably) First game of 2011 I'll buy in 2012: Total War: Shogun 2
Runners up: Trine 2, Star Wars: the Old Republic

Re: 2011 Community GOTY

In a few weeks I'll post my full list of favorites. For right now my favorite game of 2011 is...*drum roll*... Radient Historia. Bet know one saw that coming.

Radient Historia is feels like a lost classic from the SNES days without feeling outdated or a cheap nostalgia cash in. It is a game that brings be back to why I started this hobby in the first place.

I have a few more games to play this year. Just picked up Skyrim today.

Dark Souls probably will come in second. Also Yakuza 4 somewhere near the top.

Indeed, but that reminds me on a category I forgot:

Console I didn't even switch on in 2011: Nintendo DS

I'm not that much into (classical) JRPG*, thus neither Dragon Quest 9, Chronotrigger or Radiant Historia could convince me to switch on my DS.

*added "classical", considering that Dark & Demon's Souls are for all intends and purposes RPGs from Japan, hence JRPG

Re: 2011 Community GOTY

It's been another year where some of the best games I played were ones from years before that I had skipped over for whatever reason. This year I had the pleasure of playing Demon's Souls, Far Cry 2 and ICO for the first time, which would top my list in any year, I reckon.

Biggest disappointment has to be Shadow of the Colossus. I know, I know, but it feels like it was designed to irritate. When I got to the second colossus and found out after looking it up on the web that you had to shoot him on the sole of the foot to bring him down, I gave up in disgust.

RPGs disappointed me a little as well this year; both the Witcher and Two Worlds II.

Cash grab of the year must go to Tiger Woods 12, with some of the events on the tour being held at courses only available though DLC. It also feels a bit weird that the trophies are shamelessly commercial stuff like, "Play in a Major with Nike sponsorship equipped". I suppose that's golf, eh?

At the moment, my list would be something like this:

1. Dark Souls (though I almost quit the whole thing out of frustration halfway through).
2. Skyrim (only played 40 hours of this so far, and am taking a break but will be back).
3. Madden 12 (yes, I know, but I've gotten so much fun out of it it would be a shame to leave it off the list. A really deep and rewarding game)

I've been having a bit of trouble with Zelda, but if that picks up it might make the list. Haven't played Uncharted and don't get on with any of the third-person adventures like Ass Creed, Batman etc, so they are excluded.

It's been a year in which I've neglected PC gaming to some extent. I'm looking forward to picking that back up with STALKER and Metro2033 amongst others to be played. PC gaming is so uncivilised though... [/troll]

That's two votes for Dark Souls. The other five of you had better get posting or it'll be a landslide

if you stay put, he rears up and tries to stomp you. If you hold down the aim key, it's not that tough, or, that is, obscure..

I think you're missing out

Looks like Crysis 2 will get the dubious honor of being the worst game of 2011

I still need to finish Human Revolution and that Batman thing before I can settle, but Saint's Row 3 is looking well for that spot at the moment.

Re: 2011 Community GOTY

This has been a great year for video games. Best of this generation, probably.

My nominations:

1) Dark Souls. GOTY, no question. I've spent about 80 hours on this game total, about 50 hours on my main character, and I haven't even reached Anor Londo yet. This game fixes so many problems I have had for years with JRPG's. I wish Square Enix would take notes. After experiencing Dark Souls' combat system, it's going to be really hard for me to play any other fantasy RPG ever again, especially something like Skyrim (whenever I get around to it).

2) Super Mario 3D Land. It's been a while since I played a Mario game that got the balance of challenge and fun just right. 3D Land nails it. Best handheld Mario ever, worlds better than New Super Mario Bros. for DS.

3) Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes HD: I played the original DS version last year, and the quest is pretty much the same, but the multiplayer has been amped up and refined extensively. The co-op matches are also excellent. Brad Gallaway got me into this game last year; I hope to someday play a co-op match or two with him.
