Same advice I gave to Shun: make sure you've read the Odyssey before getting onto Ulysses (if you haven't done so already). I'd start with Dubliners before the big books... can't say I reccomend Portrait in any way, but I guess it's one of those books you "must" read. (easily the worst thing Joyce ever wrote, imo).
