Re: The Female Protagonist Re-examined

Well, taking an evolutionarily deterministic approach to gender still doesn't establish an absolute standard. Just the fact that you need qualifiers - "heterosexual" and "male" for instance -...

Re: The Female Protagonist Re-examined

You're not hearing me. A woman who chooses not to wear high heels and make up isn't choosing to dress more like a man, she's choosing to dress like herself. If she chooses to speak up in groups and...

Re: The Female Protagonist Re-examined

Men don't dress in suits and ties when they're in public anymore - 50 years ago, that'd be seen as a lack of respectability. Women don't wear corsets or metal girders and filaments in their dresses...

Re: Super Mario Galaxy

Game is awesome. Really been wanting to manipulate the camera though. I guess I played too much Sunshine.

Re: The Female Protagonist Re-examined

Women can be sexy without dressing up in high heels, and they don't need make up to be feminine. The problem here is that you're defining what it means to be feminine and then judging women based on...

Re: I Do Not 'Get' Assasin's Creed

From the reviews, free-running sounds lame. You just hold a button and point the joystick in a direction. This game requires an infusement of platform mechanics so, y'know, there's actually a game...

Re: The Female Protagonist Re-examined

I think the idea is to not paint over the differences as if they're not there - women can be proud of being women in their own stories, not just as placeholders for men.

Re: Shocker: Capcom to release game from not-yet-bled-dry franchise

Hmmm, I'm just hoping the swing mechanic won't just be another Spiderman 2. If they want to keep the gameplay elements of the original, they'll keep individual target swinging.

Re: So any Metroid 3 impressions?

Ooh, and interacting with in-game GUIs and computers is great fun (love the hand actually pressing the buttons). If only the game could've pushed Doom 3 resolutions!

Re: So any Metroid 3 impressions?

For me, the constantly shifting perspective was an absolute breath of fresh air for first person gaming. About halfway through the game, I realized that the reticule wasn't moving as a result of the...

Re: I Do Not "Get" Assasin's Creed

Well, the combat looks stilted only in the sense that it's not a typical hack-and-slash. Personally, I'm digging the point-by-point - attack, parry, then counter - feeling of the combat I'm seeing...

Re: Movies that everyone thinks sucks, but you think they were OK

Yeah, I thought Hulk was pretty good. Still ranks up there as one of my favorite comic book adaptations.

Re: Manhunt 2 will be released

Seconded. Freedom of speech also entails freedom to object. I'm allowed to privately censure anything I find objectionable, and I'm allowed to influence the choices of other people. What's...

Re: Umbrella Chronicles To Feature Really Bad Voice Acting

If it doesn't have bad voice-acting, it's not Resident Evil.

Anyway, I don't see why Umbrella Chronicles is getting all this hate for being a rail shooter. Rail shooters aren't anything to write...

Re: Games that everyone thinks sucks, but you think they were OK

Hunter: The Reckoning - Still my favorite co-op game of all time. I've played it, and beaten it, with several groups of friends now over a span of 5 years, and it never gets old. Mostly, the allure...

Re: Who won E3?

I think you're equating modeling intelligence with actually replicating sentient thought, which are two different things. I can create a simple program to model the behavior of a rat in a maze, but...

And now it's catching on (witness Batman Begins), and it really pisses me off.

Re: Who won E3?

Complexity is a product of individual simplicity - just with lots and lots of individuals. It's not hard to produce, it's just hard to manipulate. At the fundamental level, the mechanisms are very...

Re: The number 1 reason we crave better graphics/characters/plotlines..

I think most of us can still be amused by a few sheets of paper and a pencil, so I assume that our imaginations are just fine. Turning imagination into a game though, or any form of entertainment...

Re: Who won E3?

The issue, I think, is that most games just aren't revolutionary. The steady progression of processing power and control schemes haven't created but a handful of games that could truly be considered...

Re: Who won E3?

The problem is, there isn't yet any real mode of comparison between technology as form of advancement and controls. All the evidence would ring a similar tune: playing SFII with WASD on a keyboard...

Re: Who won E3?

It's identical to an analog controller in the sense that a mouse and keyboard are identical to analog controllers. Fact is, you won't be able to play Super Mario Galaxy on anything but the Wii......

Re: Who won E3?

Yes, but in that same vein, the joystick was only a slightly different control scheme and technological advances aren't usually earth-shatteringly revolutionary. My point is similar to what you've...

Re: Who won E3?

I'm agreeing with everything Chaos Wielder has been saying.

Yes, there's a traditional structure in place for progressing games as a medium, and yes it has worked well for the last 20 years and...
