'Sup?

Hey all.

Haven't had a lot of time for the forums in a while. Okay, a long while, but I figured I should make an effort to check in once every so often.

So.... How's everybody? Who's still here? What's up?

:D

I'm here, mostly gushing over Dark Souls 2 and/or moaning how boring mainstream gaming has become otherwise ;)

Cool, cool.

Did either of you catch the hangout we did earlier tonight?

Unfortunately not, since it started at 3am local time and I have to work today (I know, boooring ;))

No worries. I'll post a link at the next blog update.. it was rough as hell, but it was just the first one. It'll smooth out.

Anyway, how's GC's content for you lately?

Re: 'Sup?

Content has been great recently- GC used to be my "go to" site for game reviews a year or two ago, but it seemed to go very quiet for new content for a while. Recently there has been an influx of new content to read, which is great to see. The fact that GC tends to review stuff that the other gaming sites I use miss (gamecentral on metro.co.uk and Destructoid) doesn't hurt, either.

I'm still here, just not as often as before.

Wish I had seen the hangout invite earlier, would have tried to join in.

I'm still here. It's been my experience that forums with more than a few dozen members are always full of complaints and other negativity. People in this gaming forum actually seem to enjoy games, which is a refreshing change of pace.

GC content has been good. I'm always looking forward to the podcast. Due to recent developments in terms of real life(TM) I don't have as much time as I would like to for playing games or even just read reviews. Trying to remain active on the forums though.

JLB - Glad you feel like it's been better. Keeping content coming with a volunteer-only staff is a challenge, but we're trying!

Good to see the rest of y'all still here too. ^_^

I'm pretty tight on free time these days but i'll be checking this thread as often as possible. feel free to leave me any sort of message here, or email me, or leav a comment at my blog or twitter. i may be slow, but i'll do my best to respond to everybody.

:D

This must be seriously challenging, thanks for putting in the time and effort.

I feel like this is one of the best gaming sites on the web. Every time I read a review here, I'm expecting the usual yadda yadda, and almost always come away feeling that my expectations have been challenged, if that makes sense. You can tell that the reviewers think deeply about the games they review.

I think there's a group of heavyweights - yourself, Mike, Dan and Sparky - who represent the core values of the site, which to me are great writing and insightful opinions.

However I also enjoy the other contributors, and some of the recent pieces (book & documentary reviews, games convention reports etc) have been very interesting and I'm happy to see them.

This is also the only site where I'll read the review for a hidden object game, or a JRPG which I have no intention of playing, just for the writing. I'll stop gushing now, but kudos!

One negative for the moment - and this is a personal bugbear - you should remove the Community Submissions forum section as a) there isn't enough community activity for any review to meet the criteria (10 4-star reviews) and b) no staff member therefore reads any of these reviews. It's a bit misleading.

Re: 'Sup?

Yea. I still think there should a community submission thing, but the way they are rated, unfortunately, doesn't work. The only way I can think of to rectify this is the staff personally reading them, giving feedback, and putting them on the website proper. However, as mentioned, staff are likely too busy for this. There must be another way. I'd love for there to be something that works, and encourage me to contribute more to the forums. As it is,there's room for improvement (pissed me off a couple of months back, when I noticed my Hitman Absolution review had somehow been down-voted to two stars, and yet having no extra critical feedback.)

Yeah, that section doesn't really work. Some time ago I wrote a review and got more than 10 ratings with 4 stars average but still nothing happened.

These days I prefer to write opinion pieces on games I find interesting, or something that would vaguely resemble a travel diary, if games would be countries.

Re: 'Sup?

Hey folks!

Thanks again for the kind words... it's really great to know that somebody out there's reading our scribbles.

As for the community submission thing, I agree... It started off with the best of intentions, but the key issue is (not a shocker) the time and energy to groom prospective writers when it take so much to keep the site going.

We've been having discussions about scrapping that part of the site and maybe replacing it with something else, but we're still undecided.

In the meantime, if some of you are really keen to write for us, feel free to send me a pitch via email and we can take it on a case-by-case basis.
