Quake III: Arena – Second Opinion

Going multiplayer was part of John Carmacks grand experiment and I commend him for it. Whenever I cruised to some of the Quake specific web sites, there were always loads of new Quake mods available, created specifically for online Deathmatches and CTF games. This was telling proof that gamers were hungry for deathmatch-specific levels and Im really not surprised that a game like this was made for them.

Videogames have also been considered another plain old recreational activity, but with the release of the much anticipated online multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS), Quake III: Arena (Q3A), that perception may finally change. The activity of Deathmatching (dueling to the death in cyberspace), which was popularized by FPS games like Q3A, may finally be considered a legitimate sport; digital or otherwise.

Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style – Review

Maybe it was the way the Wu-Tang Clan pushed the game onto publishers that got Activisions attention, maybe the passion they had for the game just came through and Activision jumped at the chance. Maybe Activision and Paradox came across some data that showed some sort of connection between rap fans and martial arts. Or maybe Activision just needed a reason (any reason) to use the Thrill Kill engine and found that this game was it. Whatever the reason, Shaolin Style ultimately comes off as a gimmick game.

Game Description: Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style for the PlayStation is a violent and explosive fighting game. The characters are all members of the popular rap group Wu-Tang Clan, including Method Man and ODB. There are a total of 11 fighters, with some that have to be unlocked by completing certain tasks. Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style is the first four-player fighting game on the PlayStation, and it’s full of characters with individual moves and all of the flair and excitement that the Wu-Tang Clan is known for.

Shaolin Style surprised me again after spending several minutes practicing with a few of the characters in the training mode. I immediately noticed the amount of depth and complexity that went into the vicious over-the-top attacks. It's clear that the developers put forth a solid effort in conceptualizing a wide variety of attacks for the multitude of characters in the game.

Turok: Rage Wars – Second Opinion

Well first off, being the defensive player that I am I take issue with the design of the levels as well as Chi's "cowardly tactics" comment. I like wide open areas that allow for some degree of hiding and I wasn't thrilled by the fact that I couldn't go too many steps in some levels without running into another player or opponent. The other thing is the sheer monotony of the single player. Don't get me wrong it is functional but it's obviously been made for those who couldn't get enough of four-player GoldenEye 007 and Quake 64 II and are dying to build up their skills here and later show them off against friends.

Turok: Rage Wars

Game Description: In a twist on its predecessors, Turok: Rage Wars ditches some of the involved storyline to bring you more unadulterated combat. Start in Scenario mode, as you try to unlock 14 different characters in your training for battle. With 19 ranks to achieve, 25 player skins to unlock, and 50 medals to attain, you’ve certainly got your work cut out for you. There are 17 playable characters in all, as well as 13 different Universal power-ups this game isn’t going to get boring any time soon.

Turok: Rage Wars – Review

Actually the third release bearing the Turok name, Rage Wars unlike its two previous efforts, jettisons the traditional one-player mode for full-featured multiplayer options instead. That's not to say that there isn't any semblance of a single-player game.
