Soul Bubbles from French developer Mekensleep is a fantastic game for the Nintendo DS that is so polished in its presentation, so balanced in its difficulty, and so clever in its gameplay design that it effortlessly sails towards the top of the handheld's library, easily the equal of (or better than) even first-party Nintendo titles themselves.
Game Description: In Soul Bubbles you are a young shaman apprentice, who is entrusted with saving lost souls and guiding them to safety. You must protect these fragile beings from the hostile and dangerous world around them, and you do this by creating protective bubbles to keep the spirits safe. Manipulate your bubbles by first drawing them, then deflating them, cutting them or joining them to other bubbles, filling them with water or gas; then escape traps, extinguish fires and avoid all the sticky or dangerous surfaces that will slow the bubbles down. The game features 8 worlds, with over 40 levels to explore which will challenge the shaman in a variety of ways and push the physics capabilities of the Nintendo DS to the max.
Simple and elegant, the game tells the story of a small village boy named Toku and the disembodied wind spirit that befriends him. The plot is good enough to get things going, but it's clear early on that the focus is on the controls.
Game Description: LostWinds is a fresh, enchanting adventure that lets you wield the awesome powers of Enril the wind spirit-from raging tornados to the gentlest breeze-to guide and protect Toku, a young boy who is the only one who can help you release the curse placed upon the world of Mistralis and its people by evil Balasar. Mistralis is a stunningly presented, magical land full of wonder and intrigue that bursts to life with your every action and exploration. LostWinds' novel, playful controls let you use Enril's elemental powers to jump and glide Toku through Mistralis's different regions, buffet and smash enemies, and solve puzzles on their journey to a dramatic showdown. Bursting with new game-play ideas that embrace the Wii Remote, LostWinds puts the power of the wind in the palm of your hand.
Game Description: The active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports now spreads to your whole body thanks to Wii Fit and the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board, which comes bundled with it. Used together players will experience an extensive array of fun, dynamic and surprisingly challenging activities, including aerobics, yoga, muscle stretches and balance oriented games. The focus of these activities is towards providing a "core" workout, a popular exercise method that emphasizes slower, controlled motions, but it's the fun approach to fitness of Wii Fit that will keep players hooked on fitness for years to come.
The ultimate laid-back, chill-out experience, Arika's is another in a series of entries into the tiny, nicher-than-niche undersea exploration genre. The difference between this game and the abortive efforts that came before? It's actually good.
